Carmarthen · September 1818

The Year Carmarthen Refused To Let The Cheese Leave.

This was not a riot about disliking cheese. It was quite the opposite.

Local people objected to cheese and butter being taken away for export when they believed it should remain available to the town and surrounding district.

Townspeople Prevent Cheese From Leaving Carmarthen

A large crowd gathered in Carmarthen as a cargo of cheese was being prepared for shipment away from the town.

Attempts by the mayor and a magistrate to stop the crowd were unsuccessful. People boarded the vessel, removed the cheese and returned it to the warehouse.

Further shipments were temporarily halted as opposition grew to food being taken away rather than offered for sale within Carmarthen and the surrounding district.

A new chapter not a new beginning

The Counter Was Never Starting From Scratch.

Before Caws Riot had its name, this Carmarthen Market counter was already home to decades of cheesemongering knowledge, loyal customers and seriously good Welsh produce.

Caws Riot took over the existing Caws Teifi Cheesemongers, carrying forward a legacy that had grown over more than forty years.

The name changed and a new identity emerged, but the relationship with Welsh cheesemaking remained at the heart of the counter.

Caws Teifi organic cheeses and products from Dà Mhìle Distillery continue to form an important part of the selection, sitting alongside an evolving range of Welsh producers and independent makers.

Respecting what came before while making space for what comes next.
